Traditionally, this issue is attributed to Dumnorix, who was an influential Aeduan chief mentioned by Caesar in De Bello Gallico (I., 3-5; V., 6-7). As commander of the cavalry, the Aeduan was taken hostage by Caesar. However, the coinage predates the Gallic Wars, as several specimens were recovered from the trenches of Alesia, the Villeneuve-au-Roi hoard in Haute-Marne, and various other hoards such as that of Vernon. This type is believed to be an imitation of the horseman denarius from the Rhône Valley, which are usually dated to c. 75 BC.
