Lot 396

KYRENAIKA. Kyrene. Circa 435-375 BC. Trihemiobol (Silver, 9.5 mm, 0.92 g, 9 h). Head of a lightly bearded Ammon Zeus to right, with a ram's horn over his ear. Rev. [...] The upper halves of three silphium plants joined at the center in a triangular arrangement. BMC p. liii, 102a & pl. XII, 18. Very rare and of fine style. Slighly rough surfaces, otherwise, nearly very fine.

In contrast to the way that the Paris example is described in the BMC catalogue, the head of Ammon Zeus is actually on the obverse. Based on that, a slightly later dating for this issue would be preferable. The three half-silphium plants on the reverse serve as an easily comprehensible mark for a trihemiobol (3 half silphium plants = 3 half obols).
