PAMPHYLIA. Side. Circa 460-430 BC. Stater (Silver, 25 mm, 10.83 g, 12 h). Pomegranate; on the upper right, forepart of a lion to left; all within a cable border. Rev. Head of Athena to right, wearing a crested Corinthian helmet decorated with a tendril at the bowl, and a necklace; all within an incuse square. Atlan 24 (O22/A22). BMC 8. SNG Paris 626. Of exceptionally fine Classical style (for Side). Obverse slightly doublestruck, otherwise, extremely fine.

From a Swiss collection acquired circa 2010 or before, from Gorny & Mosch (with their ticket).

Very seldomly do defects make coins more interesting than they look. The way this coin was double-struck on the obverse gives the impression that the pomegranate is ripe, and cracked opened, ready to be consumed by our erudite -and always hungry- senior numismatist. In fact, often times, in our offices, we see the junior [Greek] numismatist dropping pomegranates on the floor so that they smash open in just this way.
