Maurice Tiberius, 582-602. Light-weight solidus of 23 siliquae (Gold, 21 mm, 4.33 g, 7 h), Constantinople, I = 10th officina, 583-602. DN MAVRC - TIb PP AVI Draped and cuirassed bust of Maurice facing, wearing a plumed helmet with diadem and pendillia, holding a globus cruciger in his right hand, and with a shield, decorated with a horseman, over his left shoulder; in the field to right, star of eight rays. Rev. VICTORI-A AVCC I / CONOB Angel standing facing, holding a long staff surmounted by a staurogram with his right hand and a globus cruciger in his left; in the field to right, star. DOC 7i. MIBE 11. SB 481. An interesting piece, sharp and attractive. Some flatness, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the Bollen Collection of Byzantine Coins.

Some scholars have suggested that this piece might be from a provincial mint, based on the odd style of the portrait and the large star, but all the minor details are consistent with it having been struck in Constantinople.
