KYRENAIKA. Barke, in alliance with Teuchira. Circa 480-435 BC. Drachm (Silver, 14 mm, 3.25 g, 1 h). [E-T] (retrograde) Silphium plant with two pairs of leaves and five flowers. Rev. B (retrograde) AP Bearded head of Zeus Ammon to right, with ram's horn around his ear; all within dotted circular border within circular incuse. BMC 51, pl. 37, 20 (this reverse die). SNG Copenhagen -. Toned. Granular surfaces, otherwise, very fine.

The monetary and political alliances between the cities of Kyrenaica are both fascinating and still relatively unresearched. A long awaited die study of the productions of the mints of Kyrenaika, will, thanks to the outstanding erudition of its by now venerable author, surely shed the revealing light of Teutonic scholarship on these complex connections, especially for the Archaic and early Classical Period, when this intriguing phenomenon is most frequently encountered.
