ITALY, Papal States. Rome. Sixtus V (Felice Peretti), 1585-1590. Medal (Silver, 35 mm, 19.60 g, 12 h), by Lorenzo Fragni , known as Lorenzo Parmense (1548-1619), an 18th century restrike combining an obverse of Sixtus V's with a reverse made for Gregory XIII (Ugo Boncompagni, 1572-1585). •SIXTVS•V•PONT•OPT•MAX• Bust of Sixtus V to right, wearing cap and simple robes; below truncation, •L•PAR•. Rev. •TVTVM•REGIMEN• (=safe government) Roma, helmeted and draped, but with her right breast bare, seated to left on a pile of arms and books, holding the Boncompagni dragon in her outstretched right hand; to left, altar bearing a bishop's mitre, a Papal tiara and regal crown; in the exergue, •ROMA•. TV, xvi, 2330-2332 (the obverse, undated but originally made in 1585/6) and 2311-2313 (the reverse, undated but originally made in 1575/6). Very rare in silver. Sharply struck and very attractive. Minor die rust on the reverse, otherwise, good extremely fine.
