SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24.5 mm, 16.91 g, 10 h), struck under Gelon I, c. 485-480. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and the reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣVRΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ Diademed head of Arethusa to right, her hair bound with a taenia, wearing necklace of pearls; around, four dolphins swimming clockwise. Cf. Boehringer Group III, Series VIII: but this is a hitherto unknown die combination paring V 54, already known with R 76 and R78, with R77, otherwise only known with V 51. HGC 2, 1306. Rare with an unpublished die combination and of attractive late Archaic style. Good very fine.
