KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 29 mm, 17.14 g, 3 h), struck by either the Regent Antipater or his son Kassander, uncertain Macedonian mint, possibly Pella, c. 325-315. Head of youthful Herakles in lion's skin headdress to right. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus seated to left on throne, holding eagle on his outstretched right hand and long scepter in his left; in field to left, bee flying to left. Price 227. Extremely rare. Exceptional in style, struck on a broad flan with a most artistic depiction of Herakles. Good very fine.

The style of the reverse die as well as the symbol of the bee gave us the hint to search in 'Pella'. Although Price doesn't illustrate an example of this type on his plates, we can be sure that it is his 227 from his description. Alan always says that we should study the books not only read them … He also recommends not getting a bee in your bonnet.
