GAUL, Morini. Circa 58-50 BC. Quarter stater (Gold, 10mm, 1.47 g 4), Flower Tree type. Boat with two occupants (?); pellet to left; all within border of small x-like ornaments. Rev. Central bar bisected by rooted tree; bent line below, crescent and three-pronged ornament in exergue. ABC 40. BMC -. DT 249. Flesche 226. LT 8611. S. 10. Scheers 13, pl. 5.118-119. VA 69-1. An attractive piece with a particularly nice reverse. Obverse struck off center as usual, otherwise, good very fine.

“The image on the obverse has been interpreted in a number of ways: held one way it appears to be two men in a boat to left; turned upside down it seems either to be a boar to right or a rayed dolphin on stilts to left; and sideways it might just be a head. The Morini “sea people” lived between Etaples (France) and Bruges (Belgium); their oppida were probably : Tarvenna ‘bull place’ (modern Thérouanne) and Gesoriacum ‘spearman’, later Bononia ‘durable’ or ‘village’ (modern Boulogne).
