Estimate: 500 CHF
Hammer Price:  6000 CHF
Lot 1100

THESSALY, Larissa. Circa 500-479 BC. Hemiobol (Silver, 0.37 g). Petasos (the hat of Jason) Rev. Λ - Α - R - Ι (retrograde and partially reversed) within shallow inscuse square. Apparently unpublished, but for a similar piece, see CNG MBS 81, 2009, 402. Extremely rare. Slightly rough surfaces but, otherwise, clear, lightly toned and well centered. About extremely fine.

During the 5th century the Larissans seem to have adored producing experimental types, of which this certainly is one. As we have seen, they produced a number of different obols that bore reverse types composed solely of letters, but they must have been unpopular because they were discontinued and are very rare today.
