Lot 407

KYRENAIKA. Kyrene. Ophellas, Ptolemaic governor, first reign, circa 322-313 BC. Obol (Gold, 7 mm, 0.87 g, 10 h), struck under the magistrate Polyanthes. Bearded head of Zeus Ammon to left, with ram's horn above his ear; behind Zeus's neck, ΠΟ. Rev. KY Head of Libya to right, her hair in a roll and seemingly wearing a torc with its opening at the front; all within a linear border. BMC -. Naville 120 (same dies). SNG Copenhagen -. A very rare variant with the ethnic on the reverse. Very slightly lightly struck. Good very fine.

From the Battos Collection.

While this coin shares the same obverse die with lot 406 (above), their reverse dies (with heads of Libya) are so stylistically different that they must have been made by different engravers.
