SICILY. Leontini. Circa 476-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 16.99 g, 7 h). Bearded charioteer driving quadriga galloping to right; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΛΕΟΝΤΙΝΟΝ (retrograde and partially upside down) Lion’s head with open jaws to right; around, four grains of barley. Boehringer, Münzgeschichte 2. Pozzi 462 (this coin). SNG Copenhagen 335 (same dies). Beautifully toned, of fine style and very well-preserved. Extremely fine.

Ex Nomos 5, 25 October 2011, 116, from the Golden Horn Collection, Stack’s 12 January 2009, 2102 and the collection of S. Pozzi, Naville 1, 21 April 1921, 462.

A superb piece from Leontini's earliest tetradrachm issue; its obverse was copied from those on the contemporary tetradrachms of Syracuse.
