SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 17.32 g, 7 h), struck under Gelon I, 485-479. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and the reins in both; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣVR-Α-Κ-Ο-ΣΙ-Ο-Ν Diademed head of Arethusa to right, her hair bound with a taenia, wearing a pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming to left. Boehringer 207 (V92/R142). Jameson 739 (same dies). SNG ANS 66 (same dies). Attractively toned and with a lovely head of Arethusa. Traces of overstriking and hair of Arethusa recut possibly in the first half of the 20th century, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From a European collection, ex Lanz 157, 9 December 2013, 61 (but listed with an incorrect Boehringer reference and an incorrect weight).
