LAKONIA. Lakedaimon (Sparta). Under the Achaean League, Circa 175-168 BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 2.42 g, 8 h). Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. Achaean League monogram with ΛΑ above, ΜΕ below and the pilei of the Dioscouri to left and right; all within laurel wreath. Agrinion 468a (same obverse die). BCD Peloponnesos 849 (this coin). Clerk 324. Very rare. Nicely toned and unusually well preserved for this rare issue. Extremely fine.

From the BCD Collection, LHS 96, 8 May 2006, 849.

Since Lakedaimon was a very unwilling member of the Achaean League it is not surprising that her 2nd century issues are extremely rare. This is one of the finest known examples.
